About the Second Life Buddy Walk

The SL Buddy Walk is a virtual awareness event in honor of World Down Syndrome Day. It doesn’t matter your location in the world, you just need a computer and an internet connection and  you can join in!

This will be the sixth year for the SL Buddy Walk. The first was in October 2008 and contained of 4 live singers and 4 DJs that performed for an audience of over 150. It’s grown over the years and last year was a 3 week long event of music and SL Vendors. We had our largest attendance ever and raised over $1400 US for the National Down Syndrome Society.

About the Buddy Walk:

The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. Today, the Buddy Walk program is supported nationally by NDSS and organized at the local level by parent support groups, schools and other organizations and individuals.

Over the past fourteen years, the Buddy Walk program has grown from 17 walks to more than 300 expected in 2014 across the country and the world. Last year alone, 300,000 people participated in a Buddy Walk! They raised $12 million to benefit national education, research and advocacy initiatives, as well as local programs. These funds enable NDSS and local groups to offer services that support and enhance the quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

The Buddy Walk® is a one-mile walk in which anyone can participate without special training. It is a wonderful, heart-warming event that celebrates the many abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. Whether you have Down Syndrome, know someone who does, or just want to show your support, come and join a Buddy Walk in your local community!

About the Second Life:

Second Life is an online virtual world, developed by Linden Lab. A number of free client programs, or Viewers as they are called in Second Life, are used to use the Second Life world so the users in Second Life, called Residents, can interact with each other through avatars. Residents can explore the world (known as the grid), meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, and create and trade virtual property and services with one another. Second Life is intended for people aged 16 and over, with the exception of 13–15-year-old users restricted to the Second Life region of a sponsoring institution (e.g. school).
